Dr. Apurba Kumar Mukherjee, MD

Apurba Mukherjee

He joined his MBBS at Burdwan Medical College in 1970. He was a first batch student of Burdwan Medical College and one of those who should be remembered for their contribution in the regularization of Medical education in BMC. As a student he had an enviable performance. He secured ‘Honours’ (75% marks) and four University Gold medal in Anatomy, Physiology, Pathology and Pharmacology. He was the University topper in MBBS. He did MD in Medicine (1981-83) from Calcutta University and again was the topper in MD for which he secured the University Gold medal. He never had to look back after his MD. After MD he has done a number of certificate courses in Diabetes.

As a medical teacher, he achieved considerable name and fame. He headed the Department of Medicine of Burdwan Medical College and RG Kar Medical College. Presently he is the Professor & Head of the department of Medicine and In Charge of the Diabetic clinic, RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata. Also he is the Chairperson of Association of Physicians of India (API), Scientific Chairperson of Diabetes Association of India (DAI) and Chairperson of the West Bengal Branch of Research Society of Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI).

Dr Uday C Ghoshal

Dr. Uday C Ghoshal, MD, DNB, DM, FACG is currently working as Professor in the Department of Gastroenterology at SGPGI, Lucknow. He is a graduate of Burdwan Medical College. He was the University topper in all three MBBS and secured Honours marks in all subjects in 1st MBBS, Pharmacology in 2nd MBBS and Eye & ENT during the final MBBS. He completed his MD in Medicine in PGIMER, Chandigarh in 1991, DNB in 1992 and DM in Gastroenterology in 1994 from SGPGI, Lucknow.

Presently he is having more than 26-yrs of post MD teaching and research experience. He is a busy clinician and endoscopist with expertise in all types of diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, ERCP, capsule endoscopy, breath test, esophageal and anorectal manometry and 24-h pH impedance monitoring (details in page 19-20). He has published more than 200 papers 60-70% of which are in high impact international journals. He has written 20 book chapters and edited two books.

He is the only member from India in Rome Foundation. The Rome Foundation is a global organization with head office in USA that provides support for activities designed to create scientific data and educational information to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). He is a member of Rome Asian working team contributing to development of Rome IV criteria, member of the Rome Working Team on Multinational, Cross-Cultural Research and Member of the Intestinal Microenvironment and FGIDs committee of Rome Foundation. He is a Fellow of Rome Foundation and Co-chair of Rome Research Committee.

He is the Nodal Officer, Regional Resource Centre for National Medical College Network for Eastern Region to develop Telemedicine network project connecting all the Government Medical Colleges in the eastern India.

He has developed the best Gastrointestinal Motility laboratory in the country at SGPGI, Lucknow. He is Fellow of American College of Gastroenterology, member of Indian Society of Gastroenterology (Governing Council Member twice, 2003-06 and 2008-2011), Indian National Association of Study of Liver (Governing Council Member from 2008-2011), Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy of India, Association of Physicians of India, National Academy of Sciences and Asian Neurogastroenterology and Motility Association.

He is member of Editorial Board of J Gastroenterol Hepatol, Indian J Gastroenterol (Associate Editor of Luminal Gastroenterlogy section from 2010-2012), World J Gastroenterol (contributing Editor-in-Chief from 2011) and Associate Editor of J Neurogastroenterology and Motility and International Journal of Cancer Research and peer reviewer to twenty seven international journals such as Gastroenterology, Gut, Scand J Gastroenterol, J Gastroenterol Hepatol, Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, BMC Gastroenterol, Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Nature Clinical Practice Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Dis Esophagus, World J Gastroenterology etc. and 8 national journals.

He is the National Coordinator of Indian Society of Gastroenterology Task Force on irritable bowel syndrome, which has successfully executed two major Indian IBS studies including 18 centers. He is also the Chair of Epidemiology and Infection section of Asian IBS Consensus Team and Asian Dyspepsia Consensus Team. He is a member of Asian Barrett’s Consortium. Currently, he is involved in Pan-Asian studies on functional bowel disease, which has recruited about 2000 patients from 10 Asian countries.

He has received 33 awards and oration such as J Mitra Memorial Awards twice from Indian J Gastroenterol, Shakuntala Amir Chand Award from Indian Council of Medical Research, Young investigator, plenary session, Hoechst Om Prakash Memorial Awards, Asia Pacific Digestive Disease Week Travel Grant, Abott Oration from Indian Society of Gastroenterology, YIA grant in 26th International Congress of Internal Medicine at Kyoto, Japan, Searle oration of Association of Physicians of India 2009 and eight university gold medals during MBBS study.

He is the Principal Investigator in two international drug trials. He has reviewed projects submitted to Indian Council of Medical Research and Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India. He has delivered invited talks in several national and international meetings.

He was a visiting clinician to Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, USA, Hamad Medical Corporation, Doha, Qatar and WHO Fellow in Prince of Songkhla Univeristy, Hat Yai, Thailand. He is involved in patient education through SPREAD. Luminal gastrointestinal diseases and GI motility is the major area of his interest. He is a passionate researcher and teacher not only in Gastroenterology but also in research methodology and Biostatistics.

Dr Diptendra Sarkar

Dr Diptendra Sarkar, MS, DNB, FRCS is currently working as Professor of Surgery at Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (IPGMER), Kolkata.

He had a stunning and awe-inspiring academic career. He joined his MBBS at Burdwan Medical College in 1987 and completed it in 1992. He ranked first in the University.

He completed his MS in General Surgery from Utkal University 1998 again as University topper.

He was all India topper in DNB (National Board of Examinations, New Delhi) 1998 and was awarded with the prestigious B Rammurthi GOLD Medal.

In 2000, he completed his FRCS from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He was the first Indian to top in the examination and received the prestigious GB ONG GOLD MEDAL by The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Till date, he is the only Indian to top the FRCS examination in Surgery.

He founded the Breast Service at the IPGME&R and SSKM Hospitals. He was the Founder-Treasurer of the Association of Breast Surgeons of India (ABSI). He was the Honorary Secretary of Association of Surgeons of India, West Bengal chapter till 2012. Presently he is a member of Governing Council of the Association of Surgeons of India. He is an Examiner of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and is Associate Editor of Indian Journal of Surgical Oncology (IJSO) and Indian Journal of Surgery.

Other than his clinical practice Dr Diptendra is also carrying out multiple research projects related to breast cancer. Presently he has 31 publications.
